A Brief History of the Pomeranian
(Copyright 2002 Avalon Pomeranians)

The Pomeranian descended from the sled dogs of Iceland and  Lapland. He got his name from a small province called Pomerania located in what is now eastern Germany. In 1761 a young woman named Charlotte traveled from Pomerania to England and married Prince George III. It was Charlotte who brought the first Poms to England. Her granddaughter, Queen Victoria, who ruled England for 64 years popularized the breed. Victoria had a love of many breeds of dogs, but Pomeranians were considered by many to be her favorite. She loved Poms so much that as she lay on her death bed, she asked for her Pom, Turi, to be brought to her bedside. Encouraged by the Queen’s Poms, English fanciers continued to breed them down to size until they became a toy breed. In 1888 the first American Pom was entered into the American Kennel Club's stud book.  In 1892 the first Pom to be shown in America was entered in a show in New York. In 1900, the American Pomeranian Club was formed.  In 1988 the famous Pomeranian, Ch. Great Elms Prince Charming II, won best in show at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club dog show.

Modern day Pomeranians are lovable, intelligent little balls of fluff that make the most wonderful companions.
